Description
I was approached by creative director Dominic Faraway with a brief to create visuals for a 7 minute piece as part of Zhang Yimou’s 80 minute residency show ‘Macau 2049’.
As one of eight segments ‘Transcendent’ features the songs and dances of the Miao people, an ethnic group from southwestern China, and a lighting installation by artists WHITEVoid.
The show blends tradition with modern technology and aims to reinterpret traditional Chinese culture through contemporary formats, presenting a mix of ancient and modern influences

Creative Brief
My brief was to create an animated interpretation of the lighting which featured 108 kinetic mirrors and moving lights.
The video needed to complement their colours, movement and pace throughout the performance.
At times the visuals become an extension of the stage with the effects zooming off into the distance, as well as moments driven by the beat and as lighting effects in their own right.
The final deliverable was 7 minutes at 12K resolution, and made with C4D, Redshift and After Effects.
Three months of work and two weeks on location at the state-of-the-art MGM theatre in Macau, this was a great experience, and a fun project to be involved with.
